Aboriginal education, particularly stronger student outcomes and current federal funding levels, was the primary focus of Saskatchewan ministers participating in the 98th Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) meeting on September 23-24 in Winnipeg.
Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris and Education Minister Donna Harpauer participated in the meeting.
"We recognize that high quality early learning opportunities support literacy and student achievement, and we are committed to continuing to invest in early learners," Harpauer said. "Our commitment to meet soon with National Aboriginal organizations reflects our collective momentum in strengthening partnerships and moving the Aboriginal education agenda forward."
"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to closing the gap in academic achievement and graduation rates between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students," Norris said. "Aboriginal education, including post-secondary education and skills training, remains a key priority across Canada and we are working collaboratively on eliminating this gap. We will continue work with stakeholders to identify and share best practices in the Aboriginal education systems."
The ministers also will continue to encourage the federal government to clarify its goals associated with the current review of its post secondary student support program.
CMEC is the collective voice of Canada's Ministers of Education and provides leadership in education at pan-Canadian and international levels.
