INNOVATIVE WATER FILTRATION PROJECT RECEIVES FUNDING

Released on September 23, 2010

The governments of Canada and Saskatchewan today announced funding for the field-testing of an exciting new technology in surface water filtration in a brand new resort community near Regina.

Tec-Water Supplies of Tisdale will receive a grant of $120,000 to assist it in completing the project, which is intended to demonstrate its patented Floc System 100 to supply pre-filtered surface water for treatment to smaller communities. The field test will take place in the new resort community of Sun Dale on the shores of Last Mountain Lake.

The funding is being provided by Communities of Tomorrow through its Municipal Infrastructure Innovation Fund. Communities of Tomorrow is a public-private organization dedicated to making Saskatchewan a global leader in the field of innovative sustainable municipal infrastructure. It is funded by Enterprise Saskatchewan through their Western Economic Partnership Agreement with the Government of Canada.

Tec-Water has pioneered a batch coagulation system to create an efficient community-scale drinking water system treatment train.

"This is another example of our Government's commitment to small communities like Sun Dale to create environmentally sustainable solutions to infrastructure issues," Last Mountain-Touchwood MLA Glen Hart said on behalf of Enterprise Minister Jeremy Harrison. "This is a great example of Saskatchewan becoming a leader in sustainable municipal infrastructure."

"Our technology allows small communities to use surface water as opposed to the traditional reliance on ground water," Tec Water Director Bill Kidd said. "This system rids surface water of the turbidity which normally makes it impossible to treat. In addition it operates on an as-needed basis, so it reduces the need to continuously operate and staff the water plant. That's what makes it attractive to smaller communities."

The new Tec Water system is part of the innovative infrastructure put in place at the new Sun Dale resort, on Last Mountain Lake. Sun Dale is being developed as an environmentally sustainable community, and will eventually comprise up to 300 resort homes.

"It is exciting to have Sun Dale acting as a type of living lab for this innovative new technology," Sun Dale Recreation Ltd. Project Manager Monty Russell said. "It means that our on-site advanced water treatment plant can offer Sun Dale residents high quality drinking water - without any need to truck water to their homes - a first for residents on the lake. We are really pleased to be able to help pioneer a system that could make a significant difference to many small communities."

"We are very excited by the commercial potential of the Tec Water system," Communities of Tomorrow President John Lee said. "This system has the potential to tap into a market of literally thousands of smaller communities in North America that could benefit from switching from ground water to surface water supplies. This is what we want to see, Saskatchewan companies developing innovative municipal infrastructure that not only addresses local problems, but also taps into a huge world market, with the economic benefits felt here at home."

The funding announced today, along with further investment by Tec Water and Sun Dale, will result in the completion of the testing of the operational capacity of the plant and potential modifications to ensure that it is meeting its specified standards in a normal operating environment.

Communities of Tomorrow works with municipalities, industry and researchers to find innovative solutions for municipal infrastructure challenges, as well as capitalize on the multi-trillion-dollar global market in this sector.

Both Canada and Saskatchewan are contributing $25 million each, over four years, to the Canada-Saskatchewan Western Economic Partnership Agreement to strengthen economic activity and improve quality of life in western Canadian communities.
