SUPPORT NIPAWIN’S BID TO BE CANADA’S ULTIMATE FISHING TOWN

Released on September 14, 2010

Premier Brad Wall is urging everyone in Saskatchewan to support Nipawin's bid to become Canada's Ultimate Fishing Town.

Nipawin is currently a finalist in the Ultimate Fishing Town contest which is sponsored by the World Fishing Network.

"I try to find time each June to go fishing at Tobin Lake, and I have to say the fishing is great," Wall said. "The fact that it is an Ultimate Fishing Town finalist proves that others recognize how much this community has to offer. I applaud the community for its efforts and encourage everyone in Saskatchewan to vote for Nipawin."

Nipawin hosts several fishing tournaments each year including the Premier's Walleye Cup, the Vanity Cup, the Nipawin Great Northern Pike Festival and the Ladies Fish for Freedom.

"The fishery consistently produces big fish that have a lot of fight in them," Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw said. "The quality of the fishing draws anglers from all over North America. They spend money in the town and surrounding area, contributing to the economy and supporting jobs. This contest helps support a valuable tourist resource and promotes Saskatchewan."

The World Fishing Network will produce a half-hour show featuring the winning town. The winner will also get a $25,000 community donation to be used for fishing-related initiatives that benefit local anglers.

"Nipawin is an amazing fishing community and is proud to represent the great province of Saskatchewan as a finalist for the Ultimate Fishing Town with the World Fishing Network," Nipawin Mayor Lawrence Rospad said. "Please support Nipawin as Saskatchewan's representative! We are still deciding what we will do with the prize money if we win but we are looking at several things ranging from upgrading fishing facilities to setting up a long-term scholarship for students going into environmental studies."
