It's the time of year when students of all ages are heading back to school, and this year a record number are heading back to the classroom after spending the summer working for the Government of Saskatchewan.
More than 680 students were hired into public service jobs this year; the highest number of students hired in recent history. Through this hiring, the provincial government was able to contribute approximately $6 million in student salaries.
"I am pleased we were able to provide these students with summer jobs to offset the cost of their studies," Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission June Draude said. "These students represent the future of our province, and I hope that by providing both work experience and a salary for the summer, we have helped them to continue their studies."
Many students say they found their summer position with government to be an enjoyable work experience.
"Working for the Saskatchewan public service has helped me with gaining knowledge and experience for future opportunities," Business Administration student at the University of Regina Ashley Kilback said, who worked as an Administrative Assistant at the Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing. "I enjoyed it!"
A large percentage of student employees indicated they would highly recommend a job in the public service to friends. As well, student feedback indicated that many view the public service as a potential future employer.
Hiring managers in the public service believe hiring students is an asset to the workplace. "Having a student was not only a productive experience, it also reminded me of the value of a new employee's perspective," Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Executive Co-ordinator Joyce Cole said.
While the majority of students are hired from May to the end of August, there are also opportunities available throughout the year, including co-op work terms, student jobs and internships.
"I would like to thank the students for their contributions and for helping us keep operations such as parks, highway maintenance, and even government offices running smoothly over the summer," Draude said. "I hope they consider a career in the public service when they complete their education."
