Establishing a caring, supportive, nurturing, reliable and sustainable relationship is the goal of the province's parent mentoring program.
A new promotional DVD aimed at recruiting mentors and mentees to the provincial program was launched today.
The Parent Mentoring Program, which has been running for more than 15 years, is a preventative early intervention community-based intensive and extensive home visiting program. The goals of the program are to improve pregnancy outcomes, enhance healthy childhood development and improve parental skills and life choices.
Parents are matched with mentors, volunteers within the community who provide support, parenting suggestions and information, as well as assist families in accessing appropriate community services.
"Health services are reaching out into communities across the province to help our residents improve and maintain their health and well-being," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "The Parent Mentoring Program is an example of how community-based preventive early intervention with very young children and their families can improve quality of life."
"The mission of the Parent Mentoring Program is to strengthen families by providing support, encouragement and information through the assistance of a mentor," Parent Mentoring Program Provincial Co-ordinator Jenise Tisdale said. "This promotional DVD will be a tremendous asset to increasing awareness of our program as it is often hard for us to fully explain what it is that we do because the program offers different benefits depending on individual needs and their community. The DVD will provide a user-friendly description of the variety of supports that we can provide."
The Parent Mentoring Program receives $500,000 annual funding. The program, which currently operates in 16 sites across the province, is one of a number of services and supports in the continuum of early childhood care options that assist in meeting the needs of vulnerable families in Saskatchewan.
