LOCAL CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE CHECK STATIONS

Released on October 22, 2010

This hunting season the Ministry of Environment and the Canadian Co-operative Wildlife Health Centre will be conducting targeted CWD testing in east-central Saskatchewan.

The objective is to monitor the prevalence and distribution of the disease in order to support wildlife management efforts. To determine the prevalence in each wildlife management zone, the ministry requires a minimum of 600 samples within a three-year period.

"We hope that by making the process of head submission more convenient, more hunters will be able to help us in assessing the disease status in the area," Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. "Hunters play a crucial role in the CWD program and in the province's wildlife management programs."

The targeted testing is occurring in Wildlife Management Zones 37, 39, 43, 48, 49, 56, 57, 58, and 60. Sampling stations will be located in:

  • Hudson Bay: Thursday, November 4 to Monday, December 20, 2010 at the Fire Protection Base on Highway 9 south.
  • Preeceville: Thursday, November 4 to Monday, November 15, 2010 at the parking lot of the Lakeland Motel at the junction of Highways 9 and 49.
  • Yorkton: Thursday, November 18 to Monday, December 6, 2010 at the Ministry of Environment shop on Highway 9 south, past the Humpty's Restaurant.

Hours of operation are Thursday to Monday 12 noon to 8 pm.

In addition to these stations, heads will be accepted at all Ministry of Environment offices, as well as two private check stations in Carrot River (DBN Service, 306-768-2446) and Porcupine Plain (Parkland Co-op, 306-278-2221).

All individuals who submit a sample through the program on or before January 15, 2011 will be eligible to win an incentive prize. Three individuals will receive a $100 gift card for a sporting goods store of their choice in Saskatchewan.
