FIRE STATION #8 GRAND OPENING

Released on October 22, 2010

Municipal Affairs Minister Darryl Hickie, Saskatoon Mayor Donald Atchison and Saskatoon Fire & Protective Services Chief Brian Bentley, today celebrated the official opening of the new Fire Station #8 in Saskatoon.

It will be the city's ninth fire station, and will serve the neighbourhoods of Rosewood, East College Park, Briarwood, and Lakeridge. This Lakewood Suburban Centre fire station will be able to meet the national four-minute response time standard for the neighbourhoods it serves. It is also strategically placed to contribute to the eight-minute full first alarm response on the east side of the city. The station will be staffed with 20 firefighters and two fully equipped pumpers and service apparatus.

The cost of constructing and equipping Fire Station #8 was $4.7 million provided through the Provincial Government's Municipal Economic Enhancement Program (MEEP). In total, the province provided Saskatoon with $22 million through MEEP.

"Saskatoon is moving forward and that means ensuring we have critical infrastructure in place," Hickie said. "Through this investment we are keeping our community safe and secure, creating employment opportunities, and meeting the infrastructure needs of Saskatoon."

"This new fire station enhances the safety of our residents, and ensures the prompt and timely delivery of emergency services," Atchison said. "Our city is growing, and with the help of the provincial government, we are able to meet the needs of our citizens now and in the future."

Saskatoon Fire & Protective Services (SFPS) provides a wide range of emergency and non-emergency services including; fire suppression, dangerous goods response, technical rescue including surface water and dive rescue, emergency medical services, inspection and bylaw/code enforcement, and community relations. In addition, SFPS is responsible for the Emergency Measures Organization, and prepares citizens and organizations for potential large-scale emergency situations.
