AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT TO BE BUILT IN YORKTON

Released on October 18, 2010

A new affordable rental housing project for low-income families is underway in Yorkton, thanks to approximately $900,000 in funding through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. The project is being undertaken by the Provincial Métis Housing Corporation (PMHC).

"Having a safe and affordable place to call home is important to every family. The federal government is pleased to have played a part in meeting that need for four families in Yorkton," said Garry Breitkreuz, Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville, on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). "These homes will make a real and lasting difference for these families and for this community."

"This project represents a solid commitment on the part of the Government of Saskatchewan to meeting the housing needs of Yorkton residents," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude said. "We are pleased to work with our partners to help bring this project to fruition and, most importantly, make the lives of four families more comfortable and enjoyable."

"Provincial Métis Housing Corporation is very excited about the development of our new duplex structures that will house four Métis families in the community of Yorkton," PMHC General Manager Greg MacLeod said.

The total cost of the project is about $1.3 million. Of that amount, about $900,000 was provided through the joint federal-provincial Métis Housing Trust. The funding balance was provided by PMHC (approximately $115,000) and mortgage financing.

The project will consist of two semi-detached bi-level buildings, for a total of four units. Each unit will have five bedrooms and a total of 2,150 square feet of living space. Targeted tenants are working parents with four or more children.

The units will be located at 155 and 159 Ontario Avenue in Yorkton. The units are expected to be completed in spring 2011.
