Harasyn Bros. Stucco Ltd. of Prince Albert has pleaded guilty to five charges under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and been fined a total of $2,500.
The charges were laid against the company after an Occupational Health Office conducted routine inspections of construction work sites in Prince Albert in the summer of 2008. The charges relate to improper use of scaffolding and the absence of a fall protection system for the company's workers.
Harasyn Bros. Stucco Ltd. pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 174(3)(a) of the regulations for failure to ensure that a light-duty scaffold plank is at least one-half metre wide;
- contravening section 174(1)(f) of the regulations for failure to ensure that wooden scaffold planks do not span more than three metres between vertical supports;
- contravening section 123(1)(b) of the regulations for failure to provide toeboards at the edge of a temporary scaffold or work platform;
- contravening section 33(1) of the regulations for failure to comply with a stop work order; and
- contravening section 116(2)(a) of the regulations for failure to use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three metres or more.
Four additional charges against the company and all charges against its Director, Kenny Harasyn, were stayed in court.
OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually and takes a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection legislation.
