Construction site preparation has begun for a new facility that will house long-term care beds and community services, and will be adjacent to the existing Watrous Hospital. The Saskatoon Regional Health Authority approved the contract for construction for the $14.4 million Watrous Health Service Redevelopment Project last month.
Today, Health Minister Don McMorris with Arm River-Watrous MLA Greg Brkich took part in a groundbreaking ceremony along with local town and rural municipality officials and members of the Saskatoon Health Region and the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to strengthening our health care system," McMorris said. "This is one of 13 communities where we are replacing an aging facility with a safer, more comfortable environment for patients, long-term care residents and their care providers."
The provincial government is contributing $9.1 million toward the project with a further $5.3 million coming from local municipalities and a fundraising campaign.
"Our communities, with the support of the Watrous Community Health Foundation, recognized the importance of this project to our residents," Town of Watrous Mayor Ed Collins said. "Without the support of everyone who lives and works in this area, we would not be here today. And for that, we thank everyone who has donated time and resources to make this moment a reality."
The Town of Watrous, neighboring municipalities and Saskatoon Health Region - including working groups of staff and clients - have been involved in planning and design for the project for the past 18 months.
"This facility is about moving our health care system in Saskatchewan to put patients and residents first," Saskatoon Regional Health Authority Chair Jim Rhode said. "When completed, the addition will allow all local health services to be offered from one integrated facility; acute care, long-term care, home care, public health, mental health, therapies and addiction services."
"Infrastructure improvements like this are important to Saskatchewan communities," Brkich said. "The replacement of Manitou Lodge with a new long-term care wing is proof that Saskatchewan is investing in the health and well-being of our people, and our communities."
Humboldt Lumber Mart Ltd. Will begin construction immediately and is expected to finish in summer 2012.
Provincial funding for 13 health facility renewal projects came from the government's $1.5 billion Ready for Growth Initiative. The other 12 projects are in various stages of planning, with several in the final design stage.
