The Town of Stoughton and Tip Top Roofing Ltd. of Moose Jaw have pleaded guilty to charges under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and been fined a combined total of $8,200.
The Town of Stoughton was charged after a routine inspection of a worksite in the community in April 2010. An Occupational Health Officer observed workers near a potentially hazardous open excavation. The Town of Stoughton was fined $5,480 for failure to ensure the workers were protected from cave-ins and for insufficient supervision.
Tip Top Roofing Ltd. was charged after two routine inspections by OHS officers at residential work sites in Moose Jaw in October of 2008 and April 2010. The company pleaded guilty to three charges under OHS regulations related to failure to provide and require workers to use protective headwear, and failure to use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three metres or more.
An additional charge of violating OHS regulations was stayed in court.
There have been 34 convictions for violations of Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety legislation in 2010-11, compared with a total of 11 in the previous year.
OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.
