Today, Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris joined representatives from Saskatoon Public Schools and Parents' Child Development Co-operative (PCDC), on behalf of Education Minister Donna Harpauer, to celebrate the opening of a 55 space licensed child care centre in Brevoort Park School.
"Child care continues to be a priority for our government," Norris said. "Since taking office in November 2007, we have made significant progress in increasing the number of licensed child care spaces in Saskatchewan. The 55 new spaces at Brevoort Park School are part of that investment. Our continued commitment to creating new child care spaces gives families greater ability to pursue education or employment opportunities while their children are cared for in a safe environment."
The Government of Saskatchewan provided more than $440,000 for the new child care centre, including $230,000 for capital renovations. In addition, more than $211,000 in one-time funding was provided to develop the spaces, including $168,000 in space development grant funding, $30,750 to assist with the purchasing of equipment and furnishings and $12,300 for materials and equipment that enhance early learning.
Over the past three years, the Government of Saskatchewan has made a record investment in licensed child care, allocating funding for 2935 new child care spaces to communities across the province. This represents a 30 per cent increase in child care spaces since 2007.
