Thousands entered and one winner was chosen in the annual Fire Prevention Week contest. Students entered the draw with entry forms found in fire prevention activity books provided by the Office of the Fire Commissioner through their local Fire Departments across the province.
Provincial Fire Commissioner Duane McKay and Emergency Services Officer Ken Snell presented this year's winner, six year old Zandyn Fink, a student from Paradise Hill School with a laptop computer. A cheque for $400 was also awarded to the school.
"Congratulations to Zandyn and all the students for promoting fire safety in their schools, with their families and communities," Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "Each year I am impressed with the creativity and knowledge demonstrated by our youth."
More than 27 thousand kindergarten to grade three students in 213 communities participated in this year's contest. The theme for this year was, "Smoke Alarms: A sound you can live with", focused on the importance of smoke alarms as a first defense against fire.
