The Government of Saskatchewan has introduced amendments to The University of Regina Act that will update the Act and allow the University to improve its governance processes and become more efficient.
Amendments to the Act include repealing the visitor section and enabling the university to adopt new processes for election of the Chancellor and Senate representatives.
"Our government places priority on our post-secondary students and we recognize that the University of Regina is an important partner in building a stronger Saskatchewan through higher education, research, and innovation," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "Updating this legislation will provide both continuity and change that will help to strengthen the University of Regina and align it with its Canadian counterparts."
Norris added that the University of Regina initiated the request for the updates to the legislation and that the amendments were met with general support from stakeholders during the consultation process.
"The University of Regina continually strives to increase our administrative efficiency and enhance our productivity as outlined in our strategic plan, mâmawohkamâtowin: Our Work, Our People, Our Communities," University of Regina President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons said. "We are pleased with the collaboration of the provincial government in further helping us meet this goal through the amendments proposed to The University of Regina Act. These amendments, which have received strong support throughout all of the university approval processes, will allow for improved governance and administration of our institution and result in better service to our students and community."
