Two more employers have pleaded guilty to charges related to fall protection under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and have been fined a combined total of $2,040.
Don Grenier of Saskatoon, owner of Daon Construction, pleaded guilty to two charges under OHS regulations and was fined $1,200. Two additional charges against Grenier were stayed in court.
Grenier was charged after an Occupational Health Officer observed health and safety violations at a Saskatoon construction site, in March 2010.
In another case, Domes Roofing Inc., of Leduc, Alberta, pleaded guilty to one charge under OHS regulations and was fined $840. One additional charge was stayed in court.
In June of this year, an Occupational Health Officer observed four workers on a roof without fall protection at a construction site in Regina.
Injuries caused by falls represent almost 13 per cent of all injuries reported in the construction sector. OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections each year to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced, and has zero-tolerance for any failure to comply with fall protection requirements.
In 2010-11, there have been 22 convictions for non-compliance of OHS regulations related to protecting workers from falls, and over $43,600 assessed in fines and surcharges.
