Saskatchewan joins the Council of Education Ministers, Canada (CMEC) and more than 85 countries from around the globe in marking International Education Week from November 15 to 19.
The theme in Canada this year is "Building a Society for the 21st Century."
"International education benefits our students, the province, Canada and the world," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "Our goal is to have more Saskatchewan students sharing and comparing ideas and experiences with others around the world, thereby adding value to their careers."
In an effort to internationalize Saskatchewan campuses, increase the mobility of our students and faculty and share Saskatchewan's educational expertise, the government has created the International Education Council. The council is composed of representatives from Saskatchewan secondary and post-secondary institutions that are actively involved in international education, and the ministries of Education and Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration.
"While helping more Saskatchewan students access additional international opportunities, we encourage more students from around the world to seize the educational opportunities available in Saskatchewan," Norris said.
As part of International Education Week, Norris announced a change to the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP) Student Category for Master's and PhD graduates applying for permanent residence in Saskatchewan. The changes allow Master's and PhD graduates to apply for permanent residence immediately upon completion of their studies, while giving them time to transition into a career related to their field of study.
International students are increasingly important to Saskatchewan. Graduate students studying in the province are familiar with our workplace, develop friendships and networks in their communities, and their Canadian credentials allow them to transition seamlessly into our workforce.
Saskatchewan has, on average, 4,000 international students at any given time. Approximately 70 per cent of these students have been enrolled at the University of Regina or the University of Saskatchewan. In 2009, more than 1,000 were graduate students.
