November 15 has been set aside to celebrate Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Day in Saskatchewan each year.
As part of these celebrations, the Government of Saskatchewan is announcing changes to regulations that will allow regular members of the Canadian Armed Forces, who were Saskatchewan residents at the time of their recruitment or deployment from the province, to now be able to enjoy Saskatchewan resident hunting privileges.
"The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes the valuable contributions that the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces make to our country," Environment Minister Dustin Duncan said. "The first Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Day is a great time to formally recognize their commitment."
Through amendments to The Wildlife Regulations and The Open Seasons Game Regulations, qualified armed forces personnel will be granted resident status for the purposes of hunting. Armed forces members currently stationed in the province already qualify as Saskatchewan residents.
Saskatchewan joins Alberta, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, which also grant resident status to their Canadian Armed Forces members. Qualified Canadian Armed Forces members wishing to obtain a Saskatchewan resident hunting licence can contact any Ministry of Environment office.
The Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Act was passed in the fall of 2009, and proclaims a day which celebrates and recognizes the significant economic, cultural and social contributions that hunting, fishing and trapping have made to the province. It coincides with the opening day of the resident rifle white-tailed deer season.
"The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation is thrilled to be celebrating Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Day for the first time," SWF Executive Director Darrell Crabbe said. "Hunting, fishing and trapping are entrenched components of Saskatchewan's heritage and are essential activities for sustainable wildlife management in our province. Thousands of Saskatchewan families enjoy these outdoor activities that leave life-long memories."
