A Habitat for Humanity partner family will soon realize their dream of homeownership, thanks to $50,000 in funding assistance from the province. The announcement was made today at a sod-turning ceremony to officially begin the construction of Moose Jaw's first Habitat for Humanity home.
"We are proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity to help construct their very first home right here in Moose Jaw," Moose Jaw North MLA Warren Michelson said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "As we travel down a new road for this province, our government will be doing even more to help people in need. This partnership underlines that resolve."
"What a great day for Moose Jaw," Habitat for Humanity Chairman Brian Martynook said. "The phrase ‘Good things come to those who wait' describes the virtue of patience. Well, I can tell you that our Moose Jaw Board for the last two years has proven they have patience and a passion. With the great support of the province and community, this home will be the first of many for Moose Jaw."
The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced by the province on April 1 to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates in providing 20 homes for lower-income Saskatchewan families in housing need. This funding is on top of the $1 million that was announced by the province in March 2009. As of October 2010, the province has committed $1.4 million of the $2 million grant funding available to Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the province to assist in the delivery of 28 homes.
Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 partnering hours, or "sweat equity," to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes.
Construction of the 1½-storey home, located at 908 Stadacona Street East, is scheduled to be completed in March 2011.
