Released on May 31, 2010

Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan honoured four Saskatchewan students at the Legislative Building today during the 7th annual Heritage Poster Contest for Saskatchewan Students awards ceremony.

"It is my great pleasure to welcome these students to the historic Legislative Building and to recognize their work and creativity, as well as their interest in our history as a province," Duncan said. "Through these students' eyes we get a sense of how young people value their heritage and their communities' historic places."

This year's award recipients are:

  • Primary Category - Isobel Kinash, (Home school) Horizon School Division, Wishart;
  • Junior Category - Freya Kinash (Home school) Horizon School Division, Wishart;
  • Intermediate Category - Andrew Van De Sype, McLean School, McLean
  • Theme Category (The Heritage of Sports and Recreation in Saskatchewan) - Carter Norrish, Loreburn Central School, Loreburn.

"This generation, these students and their classmates, will one day take on the responsibility of being the stewards of our province's heritage," Duncan said. "I am confident that the perception and sensitivity seen in their posters will guide them as they take on that challenge."

The 7th Annual Heritage Poster Contest for Saskatchewan Students is sponsored by the Heritage Resources Branch of the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport with assistance from the Ministry of Education and Francophone Affairs Branch of the Office of the Provincial Secretary. The Government of Canada provided additional support through the Historic Places Initiative.

Invitations to participate in the contest, which is open to all students in all grade levels, are distributed throughout the Saskatchewan school system. Students are asked to create an original, hand-crafted poster featuring a historic structure or place found in Saskatchewan along with a written statement explaining why the structure or place is significant to them.
