NORRIS DISCUSSES GROWTH, TALENT CHALLENGE

Released on May 28, 2010

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris is meeting today with federal, provincial and territorial Ministers to discuss Canada's labour market needs at the Forum of Labour Market Ministers.

"Ensuring we have a skilled labour force is essential to Saskatchewan's prosperity," Norris said. "Saskatchewan is well positioned to lead the way in addressing the talent challenge."

Over the course of the meeting, Ministers discussed Canada's labour market outlook, how to address skills shortages, eliminating the gap in academic achievement and employment rates between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, foreign qualification recognition and labour mobility.

Norris highlighted Saskatchewan's best practices in engaging the business community, establishing partnerships, the important role of First Nations and Métis peoples in Saskatchewan's economy, the importance of Saskatchewan's new immigration strategy and the value of inclusive and supportive workplaces.

The Forum of Labour Market Ministers was established in 1983 to facilitate inter-jurisdictional discussion and co-operation on labour market issues.
