FUNDING OF $540,000 FOR NEW GROUP HOME IN ÎLE-À-LA CROSSE

Released on May 28, 2010

People with intellectual disabilities in Île-à-la Crosse will have better access to residential and day programming, following the announcement today of $540,000 in funding toward the construction of a group home and an adult day-program facility in that community.

The funding is being provided as a one-time capital grant to the community-based organization (CBO) Sakitawak Group Home, Inc. of Île-à-la Crosse.

"The province is pleased to have partnered with Sakitawak on this important initiative on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities in Île-à-la Crosse and area," Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer said. "We applaud the accomplishments of Sakitawak in the development and enhancement of quality services that respond to the needs of people with disabilities in their community. Our ministry looks forward to beginning a working relationship with a new community-based organization in the north that will serve individuals with intellectual disabilities in their home community."

"With the financial support of the province, this initiative will enable us to construct a five-space group home and a six-space day-program facility to support people with intellectual disabilities," Île-à-la Crosse Mayor Duane Favel said. "This initiative will allow three people with intellectual disabilities who are currently being supported elsewhere in the province to return to their home community. Another two people who currently live in Île-à-la Crosse will not have to leave their home community to receive services."

The province-wide, $76.9 million waitlist initiative, announced by Harpauer in October 2008, is being phased in over four years and includes $27.8 million in funding for capital projects. The $76.9 million investment is the largest in Saskatchewan history to support people with intellectual disabilities.

To date, services for 308 individuals - or 70 per cent of the waitlist - have been initiated or are under development with community-based organizations across Saskatchewan.
