YORKTON YOUTH TO BENEFIT FROM NEW AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOUSING PROJECT

Released on May 21, 2010

A new affordable rental housing project for youth at risk of becoming homeless is underway in Yorkton.

The total cost of the project is approximately $854,000 and was made possible with $773,000 in funding from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), a $51,000 land contribution from the City of Yorkton and $30,000 from Yorkton Transitional Homes for Youth Inc. (YTHY).

"Our government is proud to help develop safe, affordable housing for young people who need a hand up," Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. "We commend YTHY for recognizing a real need in this community and, most importantly, for reaching out to help young people build better lives for themselves in this great province."

"The City of Yorkton is proud to be making a difference in the lives of our youth," Yorkton Mayor James Wilson said. "As a City we recognize that it takes a community to raise a child and as a community we all have the responsibility to extend a hand and open our hearts to help our youth.

"Congratulations to everybody who has worked so hard on the vision and dream of creating affordable housing for those in need. YTHY are people who are making a difference for youth by providing a home and a fresh start in life."

"It's been a long two years filled with commitment and significant contributions from many volunteers who have helped in bringing this essential resource for youth to fruition," YTHY President Judy Hughes said. "Our mission is to provide youth in Yorkton with opportunities for safe, affordable living arrangements according to their individual needs, and to assist the youth on their path to independence. We are thankful to be able to offer this resource in Yorkton."

The project consists of two six-bedroom buildings which will house a total of 10 youth. Each building will also house a mentor to support and coach the residents. The homes are located at 353 Bradbrooke Drive and 112 - 7th Avenue North in Yorkton.

YTHY is a group of concerned citizens who are actively working toward providing youth with safer and more affordable housing in Yorkton, and assisting youth on their path to independence.
