CHILD WELFARE CONSULTATIONS AT MID-POINT

Released on May 20, 2010

The child welfare review panel has reached the half-way mark in its three-month consultation process with stakeholders and is pleased with the level of interest and quality of presentations they have seen.

"The groups we have met with are very passionate about the need to protect our children, to ensure that they are safe and that they and their families get the support they need," panel Chair Bob Pringle said. "Our meetings to date have affirmed the desire for a renewed vision for child welfare in our province. This review is seen as a crucial opportunity to make needed changes, and despite the many challenges facing the child welfare system, there is a real sense of hope that change will occur."

To date, the panel has met with nearly 50 groups from the communities of Saskatoon, Regina, Tisdale, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Nipawin, Melfort, Kindersley, the Battlefords, Meadow Lake and Wilkie. Face-to-face meetings with interested stakeholders will continue around the province over the next several weeks. The panel has also invited written submissions from specific stakeholders.

Anyone else wishing to participate in the review can visit the panel's website at www.saskchildwelfarereview.ca and click on the "eConsultation" link on the left side of the page. The questionnaire covers a variety of themes being explored by the panel, including prevention, protection, quality of care, family reunification, permanency and youth transition.

The consultation phase of the review will end on June 30. The panel will provide its recommendations to government in the fall.

The independent child welfare review panel consists of Chair Bob Pringle of Saskatoon, Howard Cameron of the Beardy's and Okemasis First Nation, April Durocher of Saskatoon (originally from Île-à-la-Crosse) and Carol Skelton of Harris. They can be reached by e-mail at questions@saskchildwelfarereview.ca or by phone, toll-free, at 1-877-370-6511.
