PROVINCE HELPS PRINCE ALBERT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD HOMES FOR FAMILIES IN NEED

Released on May 19, 2010

A Habitat for Humanity partner family is achieving their dream of homeownership after receiving keys to their new home at a presentation held in Prince Albert today. Sod was also turned to officially begin the construction of a second Habitat home. The two affordable housing units have been undertaken by Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity, with $100,000 in funding assistance from the province.

The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced on March 30, 2009, to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates in providing 20 homes for lower-income Saskatchewan families in housing need. Of the 20 homes announced, the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity have in one year completed 14 homes in communities around the province.

"Our Government is pleased to support Habitat for Humanity's efforts to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for Saskatchewan's low- and moderate-income families," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer said. "Habitat for Humanity's distinct delivery model has consistently proven to be a viable option to provide opportunities for deserving families to stabilize their housing and achieve their personal goal of homeownership."

"This is a tremendous partnership that will help provide a family in this community with a helping hand up," Habitat for Humanity President Morris Sawchuk said. "We are proud to work with our partners to make the dream of homeownership come true for families in need."

Construction of the four-bedroom, 960 square foot home located at 1607 Muir Drive in Prince Albert is complete. The second home, located at 1613 Muir Drive, is scheduled to begin construction shortly. Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 partnering hours to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes. This assists in the development of the Habitat for Humanity community and their neighbourhood.
