ANNOUNCING THE FIRST ANNUAL GEORGE REED GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS SASKATCHEWAN

Released on May 18, 2010

Special Olympics Saskatchewan and Casino Regina are pleased to announce a major fundraising effort benefitting Special Olympics athletes in this province.

The first annual George Reed Golf Tournament for Special Olympics Saskatchewan will be held on Monday, June 28 at the Wascana Country Club, and will feature an array of celebrity golfers from the sports, political and cultural worlds. Casino Regina is pleased to be the title sponsor for the tournament.

Saskatchewan Roughriders great George Reed has agreed to serve as the Honorary Chairman of the tournament and has difficulty in hiding his excitement. Reed, now the Corporate Event Host for Casino Regina, began his involvement with Special Olympics in the 1970s.

"There are few things that I have done in my life that have given me such a sense of accomplishment, enjoyment and humility as I have received from being involved in Special Olympics Saskatchewan," Reed said. "It's a great program and I know that the people will support this golf tournament. Nobody gets behind charity events like the people of Saskatchewan."

"At Casino Regina, we're proud to support events that truly help our communities," Minister responsible for Sask Gaming Bill Hutchinson said. "We're very excited to be involved in this tournament to raise money for such a great group of Saskatchewan athletes."

"The proceeds from the tournament will go to the George Reed Sport Legacy Fund, which recognizes George's commitment and dedication to the intellectually disabled of the province," Special Olympics Saskatchewan Chief Executive Officer Howard Schweitzer said. "We're grateful to George for his continuing support, and to Casino Regina for their donation of $15,000."

In addition to Reed, celebrities who have confirmed their attendance include tournament chair Bob Hughes, Regina Mayor Pat Fiacco, former Roughriders Bob Poley, Roger Aldag, Jim Hopson, Steve Mazurak, Cleveland Vann and Matt Dominguez, men's Olympic gold medal curler Ben Hebert, women's Olympic gold medal curlers Jan Betker and Marcia Gudereit, four time world curling champion Sam Richardson, Saskatchewan women's curling champion Amber Holland, News Talk Radio host Dave Arnold, Roughrider wives Jen Dominguez and Mona Crandell, acclaimed entertainer Rory Allen and internationally renowned guitarist Jack Semple. All of the celebrity guests will be available for media interviews between now and June 28.

The tournament weekend will begin with a reception the evening of Sunday, June 27 at Casino Regina. Golfers will be able to bid on which celebrity they would like to have on their team the next day.

A gala banquet will follow the tournament featuring musical entertainment from Jack Semple and greetings from Special Olympics athletes. The banquet will be emceed by the dynamic radio and television husband and wife team Greg and Jill Morgan.

Entry forms and pledge sheets are available on the Special Olympics Saskatchewan website, www.specialolympics.sk.ca.

Special Olympics Saskatchewan has approximately 1,300 athletes and 600 volunteers throughout the province.
