NEW CULTURAL BUILDING OPENS AT KILBURN HALL YOUTH CENTRE

Released on May 17, 2010

Today Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert joined with Elders and guests at the opening and blessing of the new cultural building at Kilburn Hall Youth Centre in Saskatoon.

The new building will allow for the expansion of cultural services and other programming that will help reduce the risk of youth re-offending when they return to the community.

"The construction of this new centre fills a large gap in cultural services to the youth," Huyghebaert said. "This facility will allow Kilburn Hall to be better able to meet the spiritual needs of First Nations and Métis youth."

The new cultural building will also help Kilburn Hall Youth Centre build on its relationships with cultural advisors and First Nation and Métis groups in the community.

The cost of the new building was $113,000. It will be used for sweats, grieving ceremonies and special events year round.

Kilburn Hall Youth Centre has the capacity to house 45 male and female young offenders in secure custody.
