The Saskatchewan Government announced today it is supporting the expansion of a program that will help young people in Saskatchewan get active.
The Ministry of Tourism, Parks Culture and Sport is providing the Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District (PVSCRD) with a $45,000 grant for the HIGH FIVE® program.
HIGH FIVE® is a quality assurance training standard that provides recreation program staff and supervisors with the knowledge and skills to implement quality and developmentally appropriate programming to children ages 6-12.
"Young people often spend time after school watching TV or playing on a computer," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Dustin Duncan said. "Targeting the after-school hours as a high priority for increased physical activity opportunities is critical. We need to get our children off the couch and on the playground so that they are happy, healthy and active. Investing in our children will help ensure Saskatchewan remains a great place to live."
The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) will implement the program in the province, in partnership with the Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District and the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport.
"As the Provincial Co-ordinator of HIGH FIVE® in Saskatchewan, SPRA is pleased to be working with the Parkland Valley Sport Culture and Recreation District in rolling out this training program," SPRA President Darrell Lessmeister said. "Having a province-wide quality assurance training standard in place will ensure children and youth across the province will have the opportunity to engage in quality and developmentally appropriate recreation opportunities in safe, positive environments and the financial support from the Government of Saskatchewan is integral to its success."
The Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District has been running a pilot HIGH FIVE® program in the Yorkton area since 2008.
"Our experience with HIGH FIVE® training has been very positive from both the front line leaders and the participants," PVSCRD Executive Director Sheila Hryniuk said. "As program providers it is very important to be able to provide quality assurance training to leaders so that programs work toward meeting the mental, physical and emotional needs of the children.
"The leaders learn, understand and incorporate the principles of healthy child development along with the program design guidelines. By starting with this foundation, programs are created that are welcoming, safe and fun for all participants."
The two-year HIGH FIVE® strategy will train approximately 525 individuals in the Principles of Healthy Childhood Development; 230 in HIGH FIVE® QUEST - a workshop designed to help directors or managers improve children's programs by measuring the quality of the organization's policies and procedures; 25 HIGH FIVE® Trainers and two Master Trainers.
Health Canada recommends that young people get at least 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity every day. Saskatchewan in motion urges families, schools and communities to support our youth, so they can complete the 90 minutes of physical activity recommended. HIGH FIVE® will increase the opportunities available to Saskatchewan's young people.
HIGH FIVE® training will be held in a number of communities across the province, commencing spring 2010. For additional information, contact Karen Thompson, SPRA Consultant - Leadership and Evaluation at 306-780-9389.
