NEW LONG TERM CARE BEDS ANNOUNCED IN SASKATOON

Released on May 12, 2010

The Ministry of Health, along with the Saskatoon Health Region, has approved a pilot project that will bring 100 new long term care beds to Saskatoon. The innovative new facility will be owned and operated by Amicus Health Care Inc., a subsidiary of the Catholic Health Ministry of Saskatchewan (CHMS).

"The Patient First Review identified that our current system needs to do more to meet the needs of those seniors requiring long-term care, a service that is becoming increasingly more important with an aging population," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "We are excited to see the result of this pilot project. This facility will help with pressures in our acute care system by providing another long-term care option and could result in a new model for how we deliver long term care in the province."

The Amicus facility is a unique approach that includes plans for up to 20 suites that will accommodate couples and includes a model for "aging in place", where the needs of the resident are met over time within the facility resulting in dignity and stability for the residents. The couple suites require only one spouse demonstrating a need for long term care, thus keeping loved ones together. The facility also includes plans for a dementia unit.

This project tests a new financial arrangement that does not require the provincial government to provide up-front capital financing for the project. The total operating budget for Amicus will be comparable to similar long term care facilities in the health region and the cost to build, maintain and operate the facility, while yet to be determined, shall not exceed $185/day/resident. Amicus is responsible for all capital costs associated with this project and will be responsible for project overruns, ongoing maintenance and running of the facility.

"Saskatoon Health Region is pleased to see Amicus and the ministry proceed with this initiative," Saskatoon Regional Health Authority Board Chair Jim Rhode said. "The need is always great for these beds and the region will continue to work with organizations like Amicus and all of our 19 affiliates to provide appropriate care and services now and into the future. In addition, we will continue to explore all other options to provide services to those in need such as focusing on prevention, early intervention and a variety of other options within the continuum of care to meet the long term health needs."

"The new facility will provide a progressive, vibrant and welcoming environment that supports independence and provides individuals with the highest quality care that promotes mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs through the effective use of resources," Amicus Board Chair Jean Mahoney said. "We look forward to working with the CHMS, the Ministry of Health, and the Health Region to address long term care capacity issues in Saskatchewan."

Amicus Health Care Inc. has secured land in the southeast corner of Saskatoon, in the Stonebridge subdivision. The facility will take approximately two years to build.
