CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON REGINA’S INNOVATIVE DOUGLAS PARK SCHOOL

Released on May 10, 2010

Douglas Park School students and staff were joined by Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz to kick off the start of construction of their new school building.

"The new Douglas Park School building is going to be a great addition to the community and a fantastic place for students to learn," Krawetz said.

The new school features three different learning communities for different grade levels, with their own commons area and a variety of different kinds of learning spaces. The school is able to come together in the main school commons area at the centre of the school. Other areas include a new gym space, integrated learning centre, media centre, indoor play space and a music room.

"We welcome the start of construction of the new Douglas Park School," Regina Board of Education Chair Barbara Young said. "This is a community that has come together to design a school that will help innovate education. Together, we are building a place where children can learn and grow and a place where everyone belongs.

Earth-friendly design features have been introduced to lower the environmental impact of the school. The new school has been designed to maximize southern daylight to reduce the need for artificial light. The school also features two green roof areas and will be landscaped with tree breaks and earth berms to protect playground areas from winds and storms.

The new Douglas Park School will support Regina Public Schools' focus on Structural Innovation and 21st Century Learning. The structure of the facility will complement and promote Flexible Teaching Arrangements, Teacher Collaboration, Interdisciplinary and Inquiry Based Teaching and Learning, and Inclusive Practices. The school is expected to open for the 2011-12 school year.

Over the past three years the Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $328 million to move forward 28 major school capital projects as well as 400 smaller school capital projects across the province. This contribution includes an estimated government share of approximately $11 million for Douglas Park School. In total, this represents a record high investment in school infrastructure and coincides with the first increase in provincial enrollment in 17 years.
