TWO FIRMS PLEAD GUILTY TO OHS VIOLATIONS

Released on May 7, 2010

Two employers have pled guilty to violations under Saskatchewan's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation.

Ron Guttormson, owner of Wild West Construction, pled guilty to two charges under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 and was fined a total of $1,320. The charges included one charge of contravening section 91(1) of the regulations (failure to provide and require workers to use approved industrial protective headwear) and one charge of contravening section 192(2)(h) of the regulations (failure to use a personal fall arrest system when working on an elevating work platform).

Greg Wintringham, owner of Wintringham Roofing, pled guilty to one charge under section 17(1)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure all work was sufficiently and competently supervised), and was fined $840.

These charges were the result of proactive routine inspections by Occupational Health Officers, who inspect workplaces around Saskatchewan throughout the year.

Occupational Health and Safety has a zero tolerance approach to non-compliance or violations of fall protection legislation.

OHS conducts approximately 4,000 workplace inspections annually and provides training to more than 4,000 employer and worker representatives each year on their safety responsibilities.
