WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE PODIUM ENHANCES SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Released on May 6, 2010

Saskatoon and area businesses, organizations and public facilities will soon be able to provide enhanced services for wheelchair users speaking at meetings, conferences and special events thanks to the construction of a new wheelchair accessible podium by the Government of Saskatchewan.

The podium, unveiled today by Premier Brad Wall and Government Services Minister Christine Tell, will make it easier for wheelchair users to speak comfortably at a podium in a public setting.

"Accessibility is an issue of great importance, and providing support to wheelchair users in our province is one way we can help improve accessibility," Wall said.

Heather Kuttai, a three time paralympic medalist, worked with the Ministry of Government Services to construct the podium.

"People with disabilities often struggle with looking and feeling different from others," Kuttai said. "The best thing about this podium is that it doesn't look any different than a standard podium. It's quiet and doesn't draw a lot of attention, and it's simple to use."

Saskatoon's podium will be housed in Saskatoon at Regional Government Services Accommodation Services Office. This complements the podium already available in Regina which is housed at the Provincial Legislative Building. Both podiums will be available free for use by any individual, business or organization. Transportation of the podium will be arranged and paid for by the organization involved.

Businesses, organizations and public facilities can arrange to use the podium in Saskatoon by contacting the Ministry of Government Services in Saskatoon at 306-933-5041 and in Regina at 306-787-6630.
