SUPPORT FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY LEADERSHIP CHARTER

Released on May 6, 2010

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris has signed Saskatchewan's first-ever Health and Safety Leadership Charter.

The objective of the Charter is to commit leadership to eliminating workplace injuries and illnesses within the ministry.

"The Ministry responsible for Occupational Health and Safety should endeavour to lead by example in making public sector workplaces safer and healthier," Norris said. "We can bolster our efforts to achieve the goals of WorkSafe Saskatchewan through a change in attitudes and behaviours toward safety."

By endorsing the Safety Charter, the ministry will integrate health and safety into its business strategies, strive for continuous improvement, extend health and safety beyond the workplace and enable employee participation.

"As the first to sign the Saskatchewan Health and Safety Leadership Charter, Minister Norris signals he and his ministry will be pacesetters," Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) Chairperson David Eberle said. "His ardent commitment to safer, healthier workplaces in Saskatchewan is reaffirmed by signing this charter."

Advanced Education, Employment and Labour and WCB have partnered as WorkSafe Saskatchewan to eliminate workplace injuries and achieve Mission: Zero.
