SASKATCHEWAN WORKERS SEE ANOTHER EARNINGS JUMP

Released on March 31, 2010

Average weekly earnings for Saskatchewan workers continued to rise in January, with a year over year increase of 4.1 per cent.

According to Statistics Canada's Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours, Saskatchewan's average weekly earnings of $828.24 were the third highest in Canada, behind only Alberta ($965.09) and Ontario ($863.07).

"Indicators continue to suggest that Saskatchewan will emerge from the global economic recovery as a fiscal leader in our country," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "More importantly, this jump in earnings demonstrates that Saskatchewan workers are directly benefiting from our strong economic position."

The year over year increase of 4.1 per cent over January 2009 is the second highest growth rate in Canada, behind Newfoundland and Labrador (5.3 per cent) and ahead of Alberta (1.8 per cent), British Columbia (1.9 per cent) and well above the national average of 2.1 per cent.

"Looking forward, job prospects in Saskatchewan continue to look bright, with both short- and long-term forecasts showing significant growth," Norris said. "Right now, there are more than 6,600 jobs available on saskjobs.ca, and that number continues to trend upward."
