FINANCE MINISTER SAYS NO TO HARMONIZED SALES TAX

Released on March 26, 2010

Finance Minister Rod Gantefoer today said the provincial government will not be implementing a harmonized sales tax in Saskatchewan.

"Premier Wall has been very clear on the government's position," Gantefoer said. "A harmonized sales tax shifts too much of the tax burden to consumers and our government is not interested in doing that."

On August 6, 2009, Premier Wall stated the following:

"You know in an election campaign in 2007, I was asked about harmonization and I said that we wouldn't be going in that direction if we were elected. We don't want to raise taxes; we don't think it's right."

Minister Gantefoer today acknowledged that business groups and others may have this debate, but the Government of Saskatchewan's positiion is unchanged.

"I wasn't clear enough about the government's position," Gantefoer said. "It hasn't changed in two years of being government, and it isn't changing now. We will not be harmonizing the provincial sales tax with the GST."
