NEW 54 SPACE CHILD CARE CENTRE OPENS IN PRINCE ALBERT

Released on March 18, 2010

Today, Premier Brad Wall and Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz joined the Children's Choice Child Development Co-operative Board, representatives from the Prince Albert Catholic School Division and families to celebrate the opening of a 54 space licensed child care centre in Prince Albert's St. Michael Community School.

"Since taking office in November 2007, we have made significant progress in increasing the number of licensed child care spaces in Saskatchewan," Wall said. "In the first two years of our term, we directed new funding toward 2,700 licensed child care spaces. The new spaces at Children's Choice St. Michael are part of that investment."

"These new spaces will serve a great need in this area of Prince Albert," Children's Choice Executive Director Gail Szautner said. "This exciting partnership with the school, the school board and the Ministry of Education has made the development of these new spaces possible. We look forward to building on this partnership in the future."

"We are proud to be part of this project and pleased to have had this opportunity to partner with the Ministry of Education and Children's Choice," Prince Albert Catholic School Division Board of Education Chair George Bolduc said. "This is a great example of how people working together can assist families with young children."

The Government of Saskatchewan provided just under $420,000 for capital renovations to assist in developing the child care facility at St. Michael Community School. In addition, more than $227,000 in one-time funding was provided to develop the spaces, including more than $181,000 in space development grant funding, more than $33,000 to assist with the purchasing of equipment and furnishings and more than $13,000 for materials and equipment that enhance early learning. Forty-four of the centre's new spaces will serve preschool-aged children and 10 spaces will be for toddlers.

Children's Choice St. Michael is the third child care centre operated by the Children's Choice Child Development Co-operative Board in Prince Albert, and is one of five child care centres in Prince Albert to open or expand this year. On March 1, 20 new spaces opened at Prince Albert Family Church, and 32 new spaces opened at Riverside Community School on March 15. Nineteen new spaces operated by the West Flat Citizens Group will open at the beginning of April, and 37 new spaces will open by mid-May at the expanded Family Futures facility in the former Pineland Homecare building on 9th Street East.
