A NEW ADDICTIONS TREATMENT CENTRE OPENS IN REGINA

Released on March 18, 2010

People from across southern Saskatchewan who want help with their addictions will have a new, modern and safe place in Regina to start their journey of recovery.

Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region (RQHR) is opening a new 45-bed Addiction Treatment Centre at 1640 Victoria Avenue. It will house 20 brief detoxification beds and 25 social detoxification beds, a newly integrated service the Region is offering.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to enhancing alcohol and drug treatment services across the province," Health Minister Don McMorris said. "This facility is a step forward in creating increased access to detoxification services that put the needs and care of the patient first."

Brief detoxification services provide a place for people to stay for a short period in a warm and secure setting where they can choose to access more services to help with their addictions. Social detoxification services last between 10 to 14 days, during which time clients will attend programming and activities held in the facility.

"Our new Addiction Treatment Centre brings together under one roof, key adult addictions services and allows us to better serve the needs of those coping with addictions," RQHR President and CEO Dwight Nelson said. "And our brief detoxification service provides a place for people to go where they are treated with dignity and respect, rather than ending up on the streets."

The new facility will offer adult addictions assessment, individual treatment and group counselling services, access to visiting health care professionals, optional AA meetings and individualized case management services.

The Ministry of Health provided just over $6.6 million toward capital costs and will provide $1.125 million in annual operating funding. The total cost of the project is more than $7.7 million, with additional capital funding from RQHR and the Government of Canada.
