Arcola Community School students and staff took advantage of the early spring temperatures today to join Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz in a sod turning to celebrate the start of construction on their new "green" designed school building.
"The new Arcola Community School will provide a safe, comfortable and attractive place for students to learn," Krawetz said. "I am pleased the students will have a new facility that truly reflects this great school community."
Earth-friendly design features have been introduced to lower the environmental impact of the school. The school, which has been designed to meet LEED Silver Certification standards and the National Energy Model, has a green roof with a weather station, a vegetable and herb garden for students and a layout that maximizes natural light.
"We are looking forward to the start of construction of the new Arcola Community School," Regina Board of Education Chair Barbara Young said. "All corners of the Arcola community came together to create a design for a school that will incorporate innovative approaches to educating our children. Together, we are building a place to learn, a place to grow and a place where everyone belongs."
The new Arcola Community School will support Pre-kindergarten to Grade 8 instruction and is designed to support Regina Public Schools' focus on Structural Innovation and 21st Century Learning. The structure of the facility will complement and promote flexible teaching arrangements, teacher collaboration, interdisciplinary and inquiry based teaching and learning, and inclusive practices. Notable features will include an atrium, community nutrition room, media and resource centre and a space developed specifically for the Centre for the Visually Impaired that supports students from all Regina school divisions.
This school, which is expected to open for the 2011-12 school year, is being designed to accommodate 400 students with an expected opening day enrolment of 360 students.
The Government of Saskatchewan's contribution for the project is estimated at approximately $11 million.
Over the past two years, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $303.4 million to move forward 22 major school capital projects including Arcola Community School, and more than 150 additional, smaller projects in schools across the province.
