Nineteen renovated condominium units are available for low income families in Regina, thanks to funding from the Province of Saskatchewan and Namerind Housing Corporation (Namerind).
The total cost of the project is approximately $1.6 million. Of that amount, the province contributed $923,000, with Namerind providing an additional $434,000. The funding balance ($302,000) will be provided through mortgage financing.
"Our government is pleased to partner with Namerind Housing Corporation to help create family stability, enhance the quality of homes and make housing more affordable for families in this community who need a helping hand," Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer said. "Housing availability and affordability is an important priority for our government, and this initiative is a key part of that vision."
Since 2008, the province has invested more than $44 million in more than 500 affordable rental housing units in Saskatchewan, both new construction and acquired and renovated projects. Currently, commitments have been made for an additional $101 million, translating into more than 900 rental units which are under construction or in development. In addition, the province is working with groups to commit more than 200 affordable rental units for approximately $27 million.
"This condominium project is one of the many ways in which Namerind is able to provide affordable housing for our community, while creating jobs for Aboriginal people," Namerind Housing Corporation CEO Robert Byers said. "Working with the province and our extensive group of contractors and trades people, we were able to renovate and update these units to create not only housing, but real homes that our residents can be proud to live in."
Namerind acquired 19 existing housing units (two two-bedroom and 17 three-bedroom units) in a 94-unit townhouse condominium project located in the Glencairn neighbourhood of east Regina. Namerind and the province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, rejuvenated and upgraded the units. Work included replacing furnaces with high efficiency models, upgrading electrical and plumbing systems, reinforcing basement concrete walls and replacing flooring. All units have been renovated and are fully occupied.
Established in 1977, Namerind is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe, affordable housing for Regina's Aboriginal community and creating opportunities for economic and community development.
