The Government of Saskatchewan has committed $15 million to municipalities through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison announced today.
The province has funded 118 community recreational infrastructure projects with a total value of $52.6 million.
"Municipal infrastructure is one of our top priorities and this funding to improve recreational facilities all across our province helps move Saskatchewan forward," Harrison said. "What makes this program particularly rewarding is the commitment by municipalities and by local, grass-roots organizations which raised money to see their facilities improved so that Saskatchewan people can benefit."
The RInC program provides funding for projects to rehabilitate recreational facilities. Arenas, parks, ball diamonds, recreational fields and trails are among the types of facility improvement projects funded in Saskatchewan communities.
"There's no doubt that projects like the Douglas Park- Leibel Field upgrades funded by the RInC program will be highly beneficial for minor football and user groups in the community," Regina Minor Football President Kelly Hamilton said.
Hamilton is refering to the $3 million upgrades to the sports field and facilities in Regina, which includes $750,000 from the province through RInC.
"As a user group you can see the benefits this program brings for everyone," Regina Soccer Association Executive Director Dennis Morse said of the upgrades. "The RInC grant's ability to finance this facility immediately is something you can't say enough of. Without this, improvements like we were looking for would have taken place many years down the road."
RInC is a federally-administered infrastructure program cost-shared among the federal, provincial and municipal governments as well as community organizations.
