To celebrate the start of construction at Humboldt Collegiate Institute, the entire school student body and staff got a virtual look at what their new school will look like as part of the Humboldt Uniplex. The new school facility, which is expected to be completed next year, will house grades nine through 12, Carlton Trail Regional College and will be connected to the Humboldt Uniplex, which includes a hockey arena, curling rink and aquatic centre.
The many partners involved in building the new facility were also on hand to view the presentation.
"I would like to congratulate the college and all the people who worked to make this project a reality," said Brad Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, on behalf of Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology. "Carlton Trail Regional College plays a vital role in the community of Humboldt, and this project will ensure this role can continue."
"The new Humboldt Collegiate Institute will provide a safe, comfortable and attractive place for students to learn," Deputy Premier and Education Minister Ken Krawetz said. "I am pleased that the students in Humboldt will have a school building that truly reflects the kind of great school community we have here."
"Our government is maintaining Saskatchewan's strong and steady economy through infrastructure investments which will boost economic activity and build our knowledge economy," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "This new facility will allow Carlton Trail Regional College to offer more post-secondary training opportunities to students, thereby enhancing their learning experience."
"We value partnerships that bring with them so much potential to provide improved opportunities for students and we are committed to maintaining and strengthening those relationships as this project proceeds," Horizon School Division's Board of Education Chair Eldon Van Den Bossche said.
"A new, innovative Humboldt Collegiate Institute, connected to a shared-use facility, will undeniably enhance student learning and achievement," Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Board of Education Chair Diane Boyko said.
"Our Uniplex recreational complex is the heart of our community and the addition of the new high school and regional college provides tremendous opportunities for enhancing the programs and services for education, recreation, cultural and social activities," Humboldt Mayor Malcom Eaton said. "We are very excited about the shared vision we have created with the school divisions and the college for the growth and development of our community."
"Carlton Trail Regional College is excited to move to the next stage in realizing a new home that will include both administrative offices and classrooms," Carlton Trail Regional College CEO and St. Peter's College President Mr. Glen Kobussen said. "The new facility will enable us to continue to broaden and strengthen program delivery to the east central region of Saskatchewan."
The Ministry of Education contribution to build the high school is $12.5 million, with a base bid for the high school component at $18.4 million. The Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour has invested $4 million through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program to Carlton Trail Regional College. The Government of Canada has also provided a financial contribution of just more than $2 million to help construct the wings to connect the school facility to the Uniplex.
Over the past two years, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $303.4 million to move forward 22 major school capital projects including Humboldt Collegiate Institute, and more than 150 additional, smaller projects in schools across the province.
The Knowledge Infrastructure Program, a two-year, $2 billion economic stimulus measure to support infrastructure enhancement at Canadian post-secondary institutions is part of the $12 billion in new infrastructure investment allocated under Canada's Economic Action Plan. The program is providing real economic stimulus and employment by creating local jobs for engineers, architects, trades people and technicians. It is also helping to generate the advanced technological infrastructure needed to keep Canada's research and educational facilities at the forefront of scientific advancement.
