Citizens and visitors to Saskatchewan's capital are invited to the Opening Ceremonies of Regina's Canada Day Celebration in Wascana Park on July 1.
"On Canada Day, we come together as a nation to celebrate our heritage of freedom and display our pride in our country," Minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission Dustin Duncan said. "I invite everyone in the capital city to come out and help kick-off what is sure to be a terrific celebration."
The opening ceremony will commence on the main stage across the lawn from the Legislative Building at 12 noon. The program will include a 21 Gun Salute and performances by the Saskatchewan Youth Orchestra, local musician Christie-Anne Blondeau, multicultural dance groups and the University of Regina cheerleading team.
Also, on Canada Day, the Edwardian Gardens at Government House will be officially opened by Lieutenant Governor Dr. Gordon Barnhart.
"The gardens are a welcoming, family-friendly public space that will further showcase our province's history, pride and identity," Duncan said. "We have also developed new and innovative programming around the gardens, providing fun ways to explore the grounds of Government House while learning a bit about this remarkable heritage landmark."
The gardens, unveiled on Canada Day in 2008, will be declared officially open at the annual Lieutenant Governor Garden Party. They follow the Edwardian design, popular when the grounds were originally planted, which is based on the concept of creating outdoor rooms.
The Garden Party runs from 1 to 4 p.m. with the official program beginning at 2 p.m. The party will include live entertainment, refreshments and activities for all. Coquette's Gift Shop, Butler's Pantry and the Amédée Forget Museum will be open.
