A special early payment of $3,000 under the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) will be delivered today to victims of flooding in the Maple Creek area.
"We know total damages for most claims will be far greater and final payments under PDAP will be much higher," Corrections Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert said. "However after consulting with Maple Creek Mayor Barry Rudd, we felt it was important to kick-start the recovery efforts."
Huyghebaert will deliver more than 150 cheques this morning to Mayor Rudd for distribution to the first applicants under PDAP.
Residents who have not yet applied under PDAP for assistance should expect to receive their $3,000 advance payment within 7 to 14 days from filing.
"These early payments are unprecedented, and we've been able to accomplish this because of more efficient claims processing and additional staff," Huyghebaert said. "As recently as three years ago, the average wait time for receiving an advance payment was between 12 to 18 months."
Families requiring assistance with day-to-day needs such as groceries or living expenses can receive help from the Emergency Social Services representatives on-site at the Recovery Centre in the Maple Creek Legion Hall.
Representatives from SGI, PDAP and provincial Building Standards are still in Maple Creek to help residents claim for property damage caused by the flooding.
"SGI and PDAP staff are among the more than 100 individuals on the team of provincial workers helping the recovery efforts in Maple Creek," Huyghebaert said. "A key part of our recovery work is to get a good understanding of the type of property losses and how extensive they are so we can provide the appropriate service."
Customers who had vehicles damaged should call the SGI Dial-A-Claim service at 306-778-4980, toll free at 1-800-667-7414 or set up an appointment with an auto adjuster. Customers with access to the Internet can also file an auto claim using the SGI eClaims service at www.sgi.sk.ca.
