Due to recent flooding and wet soil conditions facing farmers throughout the province, SGI is granting a one-time eligibility exemption for farm licence plates.
Under normal circumstances, an individual or farm corporation wishing to license their vehicles with farm plates must meet the requirement of having seeded a minimum amount of crop each year. Due to continuous rain, many farmers have been unable to seed enough land to meet this requirement. In order to help farmers through the unusually wet seeding period in 2010, SGI will waive the seeding eligibility requirement for this year.
"This spring has been very challenging for Saskatchewan farmers," Minister responsible for SGI June Draude said. "We understand their frustration and want to lighten their burden by removing the minimum seeded crop requirements for farm plates."
In order for a farmer to be eligible for this one-time exemption, the following conditions must be met:
- The farmer must have licensed their vehicle with farm plates in 2009.
- The farmer must intend to continue farming in 2011, and will seed enough crop to qualify for farm plates next year.
The exemption is effective immediately, and expires on June 1, 2011.
