TWO MORE ROOFERS FINED

Released on June 22, 2010

Ryan James Cyr, owner of Sunrise Roofing, has plead guilty to three charges under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and been fined a total of $1,240.

Last August, Occupational Health Officers responded to an anonymous telephone concern of unsafe work practices at a Regina construction site. The officers observed several workers on a roof with no fall protection or approved footwear, and a portable ladder that was not secured against accidental movement.

Four charges were laid against Mr. Cyr. One of them was stayed in court.

In another case, RMB Tech Resource Management Corp. also plead guilty to a charge of failing to ensure workers use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three metres or more. The Regina company was fined a total of $840. Two other charges were stayed by the Crown.

The charges against RMB Tech Resource Management Corp. arose from a routine inspection of a worksite in Emerald Park last September. Occupational Health and Safety conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections each year.

OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection legislation. In 2010/11, there have been 10 convictions for non-compliance of OHS regulations related to protecting workers from falls, and over $14,000 assessed in fines and surcharges.
