CROP REPORT FOR PERIOD FROM JUNE 8 TO 14, 2010

Saskatchewan farmers have seeded 73 per cent of the 2010 crop, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's Weekly Crop Report.

Many producers in the province have struggled to get the 2010 crop in the ground due to rain. Excess moisture and flooding in many areas have left fields inaccessible to equipment.

Seeding is 90 per cent complete in northwestern Saskatchewan; 88 per cent complete in southwestern Saskatchewan; 87 per cent complete in west-central Saskatchewan; 75 per cent complete in southeastern Saskatchewan; 56 per cent complete in east-central Saskatchewan and 50 per cent complete in the northeast. Within individual regions, seeding progress is further varied, with some crop districts reporting 99 per cent of seeding is complete while other districts have only 31 per cent of the crop seeded.

Across the province, cropland topsoil moisture remains virtually unchanged from last week at 55 per cent surplus and 45 per cent adequate. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as 33 per cent surplus and 67 per cent adequate.

Fifty-nine per cent of the province's fall-seeded cereals are at a normal stage of development, but 77 per cent of the spring-seeded cereals, 78 per cent of the oilseeds and 67 per cent of the pulses are behind normal in development.

Seventy-five per cent of the winter wheat is in good to excellent condition. Forty-nine per cent of the spring wheat, 62 per cent of the durum, 45 per cent of the oats, 46 per cent of the barley, 37 per cent of the flax, 38 per cent of the canola, 59 per cent of the mustard, 60 per cent of the lentils, 61 per cent of the peas, 41 per cent of the canaryseed and 58 per cent of the chickpeas are in good to excellent condition.

Crops are showing signs of stress from excess moisture. Crop damage is attributed mostly to flooding. Flea beetle and cutworm damage has been reported, along with leaf diseases and root rots.
