FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS SUPPORT HOUSING PROJECT IN MEADOW LAKE

Construction of a student housing project officially began with a sod turning ceremony in Meadow Lake today. The project will provide 40 quality, safe and affordable rental suites for students attending North West Regional College.

The project will cost approximately $7.6 million in total. Of that amount, the province is contributing about $4.4 million.

"This important project is another example of our government's commitment to creating jobs and supporting students in Saskatchewan," said Rob Clarke Member of Parliament for Desnethe - Missinippi - Churchill River.

"Our government is committed to making housing more available and affordable for Saskatchewan people," Municipal Affairs Minister Jeremy Harrison said on behalf of Enterprise Minister Ken Cheveldayoff and Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. "The development of this student residence goes a long way toward ensuring that students have a safe, affordable place to call home as they pursue their post-secondary education. We are proud to be a part of such a worthwhile initiative."

"Affordable and available housing for students is a priority for the government," Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Minister Rob Norris said. "This new housing development represents a solid investment in our learners and in the future of Saskatchewan."

The student housing project will consist of 40 rental units: six one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom, 16 three-bedroom and two four-bedroom units. Access to affordable housing means students can bring their dependents to the community when they move here to study.

"We are extremely pleased to provide affordable housing to post-secondary students in Meadow Lake," North West Regional College President and CEO Bryan Nylander said. "This residence complex is a step toward our goal of a Trades Training Centre of Excellence in this community. We are grateful for the tremendous financial support from Western Economic Diversification, Saskatchewan Housing Corporation and Enterprise Saskatchewan. In support of academic success, their contributions will make affordable, quality housing available to students during their studies."
