YOUNG OFFENDERS ORCADIA YOUTH RESIDENCE ADMINISTRATION/PROGRAM WING OPENING

Released on June 1, 2010

Today Corrections, Public Safety and Policing Minister D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert joined with Elders and guests at the opening of the administration/program wing of the Orcadia Youth Residence (OYR) near Yorkton.

Renovations to an existing portion of the facility will enhance programming by providing dedicated program space for cultural services and violence reduction programs.

"This project reflects our government's commitment to ensuring the safety of all of our province's citizens by improving the safety and security of Saskatchewan young offender facilities," Huyghebaert said. "By providing more programming services to young offenders, we are able to reduce the chances of them re-offending when they return to their communities."

The renovations will increase safety and security by providing a secure area to better manage difficult behaviour. Additional office space provided in the renovations will be used for program staff both from OYR and partner service providers such as addictions workers and school liaison workers. Orcadia Youth Residence houses 39 young offenders.

The renovation cost includes Government Services funding of $115,506 and Corrections, Public Safety and Policing funding of $226,000.
