The Government of Saskatchewan is investing an estimated $4.4 million with Swift Current-based Modus Modular Structures Inc. to build 31 environmentally-friendly portable classrooms and child care structures.
"With 30,000 people returning to Saskatchewan and 14,000 babies being born, we need to find solutions for schools to meet the needs of current and future students," Premier Brad Wall said. "The partnership is a win-win; we get to invest in a great Saskatchewan company, and in turn they build us high-quality, green classrooms and child care portables."
The 31 units are expected to be built on-site and then shipped to communities across Saskatchewan. The first order includes units for schools in Lloydminster, Warman, Melville, Martensville, White City, Gravelbourg, Estevan, Stewart Valley, Pangman, Saskatoon and La Ronge.
"As the Saskatchewan Government moves forward with its investment in school infrastructure, we are pleased to be a part of the province's legacy of infrastructure that is sustainable, environmentally-friendly and safe for its children," Modus CEO Randy Ludwar said. "We applaud the government's on-going commitment to green construction technologies."
The units are being built to support LEED Silver compliance. Earth-friendly design features have been introduced to improve energy efficiency, water conservation and fewer emissions and provide a comfortable, safe learning environment for students and children.
Over the past three years the Government of Saskatchewan has committed more than $342 million to move forward 28 major school capital projects, as well as 400 smaller school capital projects across the province. This represents a record high investment in school infrastructure and coincides with the first increase in provincial enrolment in 17 years.
