COMMUNITIES OF ST. DENIS AND FERLAND RECOGNIZED FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO SASKATCHEWAN’S FRANCOPHONIE

Released on July 23, 2010

Provincial Secretary Donna Harpauer will present the community of St. Denis with a Fransaskois flag in recognition of its contribution to French language and culture in Saskatchewan. The presentation will be made during the community's centennial celebrations on July 24.

"It is my honour to present the community of St. Denis with the Fransaskois flag on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan," Harpauer said. "These celebrations remind us of the generations of Fransaskois whose dedication and work ethic - not only to their communities but their culture, faith and language - have forged an identity that is still reflected to this day in the hearts and minds of the people of Saskatchewan."

The government will also be presenting the community of Ferland with a Fransaskois flag on July 31.

The Fransaskois flag was adopted as a provincial emblem in 2005 to recognize the status of French as one of Canada's official languages and acknowledge the heritage of Saskatchewan's Francophones and their significant contributions to the province.

"As a result of the collective leadership and effort of these communities, Saskatchewan not only boasts about the historical contributions of Francophones, but about a vibrant and engaged present-day Francophone community who continues to support the growth our province," Harpauer said.

A plaque will also be presented to the residents of St. Denis and Ferland, during their centennial celebrations. The flag and a commemorative plaque will be presented to a number of communities in the coming years as part of a province-wide recognition initiative.

The Office of the Provincial Secretary works with government, organizations, and communities, to provide opportunities to celebrate and promote the diversity, character and achievements of our province and to engage diplomats and consular corps who visit Saskatchewan as part of government's strategy to strengthen and build regional, national and international relationships.
