A Habitat for Humanity partner family is achieving their dream of homeownership after receiving keys to their new home at a presentation held in Regina today. The affordable housing project was undertaken by Habitat for Humanity Regina, with $50,000 in funding assistance from the province through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.
The funding is part of the $1 million investment announced on April 1 to assist Habitat for Humanity's Saskatchewan affiliates in providing 20 homes for lower-income Saskatchewan families in housing need. This funding is on top of the $1 million that was announced by the province in March 2009.
"Our Government is pleased to support Habitat for Humanity's efforts to provide homeownership opportunities for Saskatchewan people in need of safe, quality, affordable housing," Government Services Minister Laura Ross said, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation June Draude. "Housing is a key priority of our government, and this project is a wonderful opportunity to work with community-based partners such as Habitat for Humanity to help deserving families obtain housing in this province."
"Our partnership with Saskatchewan Housing Corporation allows us to give many more families the opportunity of homeownership," Habitat for Humanity CEO Dennis Coutts said. "Stable families build safe, stable communities, and we at Habitat are pleased and excited to help deserving families settle in North Central and build a healthier community."
The single family home is located at 1631 Retallack Street in Regina. Each selected Habitat partner family contributes 500 hours to build their home and other Habitat for Humanity homes. This assists in the development of the Habitat for Humanity community and their neighbourhood.
